Stat of the Week

Week 15--
The STAT OF THE WEEK feature highlights the one stat contributing most points to the victory.

San Diego Chargers--Indianapolis Colts
Yards Rushing (Net) (206 vs 24) contributed 20.8 points to the 9-point win.

The San Diego Chargers earned 206 rushing yards in Sunday's upset victory over the Indianapolis Colts spoiling their hopes of a perfect season.

By comparison the Colts only earned 24 yards rushing. Big difference.

Before the season began the computer stat analysis tabbed the Colts as the likely Super Bowl Champ. And sticks to that projection. Early in the season they were expected to be favored in all 16 games.

The expected upset logically went to one of their two tough games vs the Pats and Chargers. (SEE ARCHIVES for week-to-week Colt's progress). And they have a tough game this week facing the Seahawks at Seattle where the homefield advantage makes Seattle a slight favorite.

One of the stats which the Colts expected to contribute to this prospective 17-game sweep was the emphasis on RB James' increased use. And indeed the Colt's D was helped by his running game ability to add ball control clock time.

The stat jumped up and bit the Colts on the ankle when San Diego Charger RB Tomlinson dumped 206 tons of grief on their hopes to go undefeated.

The difference in these two ground game performances contributed 20.8 points to the 9-point Charger victory. Ouch.

2008 Season, YTD through Week 11

In season 2007 Chargers ranked 7th on Yards Rushing (Net) at 127.44.
In season 2008 they ranked 27th at 93.10, down 5.2 points per game on this one stat.
From 2007 to 2008 Chargers declined by 5.5 points per game on Winning Margin.

Washington Redskins--Dallas Cowboys
QB Sacks (0 vs 7) contributed 19.9 points to the 28-point win.

In our second Stat of the Week game the Redskins' earned a 28-point victory over the Cowboys (7 QB Sacks vs zip for the 'Skins). It will be a long time before Coach Bill Parcells sees that figure again.

But Redskin's Coach Joe Gibbs has been around a long time. He knows Cowboy QB Drew Bledsoe is anchored to the ground. So RUSH'EM. 'Skins D got him 7 times. That's a lotta' ouch.

From a numbers point of view the QB SACK is the most unheralded stat in the game. Each QB sack contributes almost 3 points to the scoring differential. When Coach George Allen of the Rams and Redskins became our first paying client back in '67 he always asked in his letters, "Are the seven key stats still the important ones?" and "What stats are import when we meet the Cowboys?"

The QB sack has always played an important role in separating winners from losers. Assume your team attempts to pass on first down and your QB is dumped. Back in the '60s the average sack lost 8 1/4 yards. So now you face second down and 18. Typically that leads to a punt. And a punt is a give up.

Tough to score when you don't own the ball.
