Stat of the Week

Week 7 - Yards per Pass Attempt

The STAT OF THE WEEK feature highlights the one stat contributing most points to the victory.

No sunshine in San Francisco. Foggy. And so is their passing game. The home of names like QBs Steve Young and Joe Montana, and the "hands" guy WR Jerry Rice are memories.

Last week's passing game matching the 49ers and Redskins on both sides of the ball was typical of the current strengths and weaknesses of the teams. A bit much so. The graphic below pictures the weekly performance with the 49er pass D allowing the Redskins 11.5 yards per toss while throwing for only 2.6 yards.

Yards per Pass Att

Washington Redskins

2007 Week 6 through 2008 Week 11

Yards per Pass Att

San Francisco 49ers

2007 Week 6 through 2008 Week 11

Since each stat contributes some "point" value to both offense and defense the difference in these two performances cost the 49ers. How much? How about 30.4 points per game contributed to the 35-point win. That hurts.

Relative to the league the 49ers now rank last on pass D. The graphic below pictures their fall from their Super Bowl days to our '05 season.

Allowing 8.53 yards per toss is not competitive. And to continue the growing weakness they are the MOST DOWN team (-7.08 PPG, RED graphic column on the right).

And 13.37 Points per Game Behind the Leader is too great to be cured in one season.
