Stat of the Week

Week 2--
The STAT OF THE WEEK feature highlights the one stat contributing most points to the victory.

Indianapolis Colts--Houston Texans

First Downs Total (34 vs 18) contributed 18.6 points to the 19-point win.

The 2006 season record for Total First Downs was set in Week 2 when Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning took his offense on field facing the Houston Texans' modest D.

The Colts earned 34 First Downs, 9 rushing (matching last season's strongest team average) and 21 on QB Manning's arm. On this "just move the sticks" performance the Colts' adding-machine offense ran up 515 total yards earning a First Down every 2 plays.

Last season the New England Patriots, in week 14, faced the then puny Buffalo Bills' D and set the 2005 season Total First Downs record at 32.

It is likely 2006 season record for First Downs was set last Sunday with the Colts 34 "just move the sticks" performance. The data suggests the Houston Texans are in the middle of a rebuilding effort.

Fantasy fans may want to watch the Texans' future performances when facing other stronger teams.

The "Gee Whiz" stat graphic (second, below) pictures the Colts' Total First Downs performance relative to the league. They are at the top, natch, in the same top spot where they finished last year.

2008 Season, YTD through Week 11

In season 2007 Colts ranked 2nd on First Downs Total at 22.31.
In season 2008 they ranked 9th at 19.90, down 3.2 points per game on this one stat.
From 2007 to 2008 Colts declined by 11.8 points per game on Winning Margin.

Atlanta Falcons--Tampa Bay Bucs
Yards Rushing (Net) (306 vs 40) contributed 31.6 points to the 11-point win.

There will be days like this: The Tampa Bay Bucs defense accomplished the nearly impossible by matching their offensive decline (down 16.7 points per game) in rushing yards by giving up 306 defensive yards to the Atlanta Falcons. That hurts.

This second week swoon puts the Bucs at the bottom of the heap now trailing the league as the MOST DOWN team off 20.6 Points per Game in their scoring differential. In the journalistic sense of Who, What, When, Where and Why the statistical reasons WHY are simple – the Bucs don’t run the ball and can’t stop the run. It’s the ugly fact.

The telling graphic pictures the Bucs position relative to the league.
