Stat of the Week

Week 15--
The STAT OF THE WEEK feature highlights the one stat contributing most points to the victory.

Houston Texans--Denver Broncos

QB Sacks (0 vs 5) contributed 16.7 points to the 18-point win.

The QB Sack is a Killer Stat. This space harps on the subject every week.

The Denver Broncos' QB was sacked 5 times in Week 15 and the Houston Texans suffered NO SACKS.

This season the Broncos were in 6 games where their QB was dumped more than the oppononent. And lost all 6 contests.

Last Sunday this falling down syndrome has cost the Broncos heavily. The Texans beat them by 18 points. The QB sack contributed almost 17 to the loss.

'Nuf said.

The stat graphics below picture the battles lost. Facing both the Texans and the Detroit Lions they had major disasters with 5 sacks.

It's a bit much.

To repeat, the QB Sack is a KILLER STAT.

2008 Season, YTD through Week 11

In season 2007 Broncos ranked 16th on QB Sacks at 2.00.
In season 2008 they ranked 3rd at 0.80, up 4.2 points per game on this one stat.
From 2007 to 2008 Broncos improved by 3.3 points per game on Winning Margin.

Green Bay Packers--St. Louis Rams

QB Sacks (0 vs 4) contributed 13.4 points to the 19-point win.

Green Bay Packers' CB Brett Favre wasn't sacked in the 15th week of the '07 season. But the Rams were clobbered 4 times. The stat graphic below pictures the Rams' desperation. This season they have had 8 games where they were weaker than league average on offensive sacks -- and won only 2 of them.

This miserable performance contributed almost 14 points to the Rams' loss.

Again we repeat, this space is devoted to the journalistic "who, what, when, where and why" of pro football. And the QB sack is a Killer Stat. It is a key statistical "reason why" teams win or lose.

There are several reasons for pointing to the QB sack -- and tough to lay the blame on any one of them: The bench is asking too much of a rookie QB (or an aging QB who no longer has it). The pass play mix is out of whack -- meaning the long ball-to-short ball control ratio is too far off the mark. The QB is simply holding the ball too long. Or if the team falls behind early and changes its game plan the early panic puts the ball in the air too much and the run/pass balance drops. Since a change of one unit in the run/pass ratio (moving from 1-to-1 to 2-to-1) adds 12 points to the average scoring differential the QB sacks which are linked to the passing game become the major reason for the team's loss.

The QB sack is a Killer Stat.
