Pennington Loss Costly to Jets

Studio City, CA -- August 25, 2003 -- Loss of QB Pennington for a dozen games of the coming season may cost the Jets 8 points per game on offense.

BudGoodeSports.com, a statistical consulting service to NFL teams since 1967, points out that each stat contributes some point value to offense and defense. In QB Testeverde'e first three games last season the team scored 15.7 points. In Pennington's games the Jets scored 24 points, a difference of 8 points per game.

On the key passing efficiency stat, yards per pass attempt, Testeverde averaged 4.8 yards, a non-competitive performance. Pennington earned 7.1 yards, a typical league-leading figure and contributing to his league-high QB rating of 104.

However, the Jets' running game improved tremendously with Pennington at the helm jumping from 15 to 27.2 rushes per game. This contribution to clock control added 7.8 points to Jet's scoring.

You might expect Coach Edwards, with Testeverde in the game, to open the season with a conservative, clock-control running offense.

Pennington's loss is a big roadblock on Jets return trip to playoffs.
