Eagles vs Patriots
Points Scored / Points Allowed
A playmaker is what football is all about. Stats don't win games.
People do. Sunday's Super Bowl big play guys will show you why.
First, let's look at a stat graphic picturing the overall balance
between offense and defense. The graph below ranks the 32 teams
from strong to weak on their scoring differential (Winning Margin).

New England Patriots lead the league scoring 11.1 points per game
(PPG) more on offense than their D allows. The Eagles rank 4th
with a 7.9 PPG average.
By comparison the San Francisco 49ers were the NFL's weakest team allowing 12.1 PPG more on defense than their offense earned (23+ points per game behind the leader). Both the General Manager and Coach were tossed to the lions.
If this one stat were used to project a Super Bowl victory, then the
difference between the two teams' stats would favor the Pats by only
3+ points.
But it's not that simple.
From game to game teams win for different stat reasons. This season,
for example, an errant pass, tipped and intercepted contributed 5
1/2 points to the winning margin. One QB sack contributed 3+
points. And an added first down rushing contributed 2 1/2 PPG.
To continue with an overall look at the Super Bowl stat profiles let's look next at both offense and defense. How do the two
teams compare?

On Scoring offense the Indianapolis Colts' QB Marnning leads the league with his magic arm scoring 32.6 PPG. Great offense but on balance the D did not keep pace. Same with the Chiefs and Chargers.
The Patriots, earning 27.3 PPG rank 4th and the Eagles averaging
24.1 rank 8th.
There is no question but what the Eagles still have a way to go to
match the leader (now 8.6 PPG behind the Colts). So in April watch
the draft and early FA trades.

On defense the Steelers led the league allowing a league lo 15.7 PPG. The Pats and Eagles were tied for 2nd allowing 16.2. Parity arrived on D this season with the top six teams separated by a single point per game.
