Packers at 49ers

Pakcers take on the 49ers in the city by the bay. Packers easily handled a Vikes squad beset with injury (starting QB). They face a tougher test this week.

The NFC West has suddenly become a serious contender for strongest in the NFL based on the play of the Seahawks and Niners, centered around defense. Both teams have shut-down defensive strength. Seatle leads the league in fewest points allowed and San Francisco is next best. Defense usually goes a long way in the playoffs.

2012 through Week 17

Last week's piece on Green Bay pointed out the Packers have come back toward the rest of league in passing stats. Can QB Rogers find the old magic? The chart above shows three SF losses when they allow an opponent approximately 7 yards per pass. Or will the Niners defense hand him a bad day?

While Denver leads the league on our key killer stat, Yards per Pass Attempt difference, SF is right on their heels, ranked 2nd. Like Denver the 49ers run the ball more than 30 times per game, earn high yards per pass, and throw few INTs. Looking like the strongest NFC team, the computer favors the 49ers at home by 4. The Packers are in the game but they'll need a big play or two to win. I'll side with he 49ers.
