Seahawks at Falcons

Seahawks meet the Falcons in Atlanta. Atlanta fashioned a fine 13-3 season with 2 of the losses coming in the the last few weeks after they'd already locked up a playoff spot. Even so our computer favors the visiting Seahawks by 2.

Last week we wrote about Seattle's league-leading defense. Teams strong on defense tend to go deep into the playoffs. While Falcons have a solid all-around stat profile, Seattle bests them in two key areas. First, on offense, Seahawks run the ball much more. 'Hawks run 33.5, rank first; Falcons only 23.6, rank 27th. In the chart below note only two games with 30+ rushes. Second, on defense, Seahawks allow just 5.42 yards per pass, rank 5th; Falcons allow 6.69, rank 22nd.

2012 through Week 17

This suggest a big ball-control edge to the Seahawks. Atlanta will be passing, and into the teeth of a strong Seahawk D. The Seahawk formula is a winner: play tight defense and run the ball (and running the ball makes defenses even better). I'm expecting to see lots of plays for the Seahawks, limiting Atlanta's chances to score. I'll take Seattle in this one and throw out another nod to the strong NFC West division.
