49ers at Cowboys

The 49ers go to Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have looked like a playoff team all season waltzing through their division. They are a high-scoring team loaded with playmakers on both sides of the ball. They are hard to outscore and rank 4th in the league on yards per pass attempt, our killer stat, offense. The Cowboys look like a team that could go deep in the playoffs, maybe all the way.

But first they have to get by the 49ers. The 49ers have pretty much flown under the radar but have a few things going for them. First, they lead the league in yards per pass attempt, (see killer stat offense, above). And the Cowboys are not stingy with regards to pass D yards, ranking a modest 21st on our killer stat, defense. SF 49ers should rack up some aerial yardage. Second, 49ers come out of a division sending three teams to the playoffs. In recent years the AFC Central has done so but is the NFL West the leagues' new strongest division? Hard to argue against it. Facing that level of contention helps teams be ready for big games. Here is a chart of SF's league-leading yards per pass attempt performance. Leading the league on the most important stat in the game always makes for a contender.

Yards per Pass Attempt - SF 49ers

Our computer picks the Cowboys by 8. I'm not on board and think the 49ers can keep this a close and potentially exciting game. In fact, 49er upset would not surprise me at all.
