49ers at Eagles

Eagles, the defending champs, stay at home to host the 49ers in Philly. Eagles are solid favorites but you can't look past the 49ers. They're dangerous.

In this space we always seem to talk about teams coming out of tough divisions. The 49ers, from the powerful NFC West, complied a remarkable 12-5 record. That's better than the Eagles going 11-6 against weaklings in the NFC East.

Pass offense is a bright spot for the 49ers ranking 5th, somewhat ahead of the Eagles with a just better-than-average 11th. See Killer Stat, Offense.

On pass defense, Eagles are strong at rank 6. That's down a bit from last season's championship squad which led the league. Still, it's much stronger than San Francisco's near-league-bottom rank at 25th. See both teams on the defensive side of our Killer Stat, (Opponent Yards per Pass attempt) chart: Killer Stat, Defense.

So how did the 49ers get here with such a soft-looking pass D? They cover for their defense by keeping the ball out of their opponents' hands. They pair their pass attack with a strong running game resulting in a league-leading Rushing plays + Pass Completions stat, as shown in the chart below.

      Rushes + Pass Completions -- SF 49ers

This Eagles team is not the statistical powerhouse they were last season. They can be beat. For the 49ers to pull off the upset, they'll need to play a near-perfect ball control game. Their stats say they are capable of just such a performance. Still, our computer likes the Eagles at home by 6. I think the 49ers give the Eagles all they can handle. Close game, upset possible.
