Rams at Bears

Rams squeaked by the Panthers and now take on the Bears. In Chicago. One of 3 NFC West teams still in the playoffs, Rams bring a stat profile that is stronger than most division winners. Such is the case in this matchup.

Rams are strong on our killer stat, yards per pass attempt -- the most important stat in the game. Killer Stat, Offense. Rams rank 3rd while the Bears come in at a respectable 10th rank.

On pass defense there is more separation between the teams as Rams rank 11th and Bears rank a lowly 28th. See both teams on the defensive side of our Killer Stat, (Opponent Yards per Pass attempt) chart. Killer Stat, Defense. When the Rams have the ball that offense-defense mismatch could spell big trouble for the Bears.

As per last week's piece on the Bears-Packers matchup, Chicago built their winning record on turnover difference. They got more than they gave. They'll need to grab a few this weekend if they are going to advance. Bears also depend on their solid ground game and they'll need to move the ball on the ground. But, Rams put up a stout ground defense, especially near the end zone. Rams are the top team in the league at preventing rushing TDs, as seen in the chart below. Only once all season did they give up as many as 2 rushing TDs. The chart is mostly zeros.

      Opponent TDs Rushing -- L. A. Rams

The L. A. Rams looked like a Super Bowl pick most of the season, just getting edged out at season's end by their division rival, Seahawks. They look much stronger than the Bears. Bears can still win but they'll need to work their turnover magic. Our computer likes the visiting Rams by 4 1/2 points. I've got to agree.
